Mexican Cinema Fiesta
Country in Focus 2025
Mexico is home to three of the most distinguished directors of the 21st century. Over a five year span between 2013 and 2018, the three Mexican amigos of Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alfnoso Cuaron came to dominate the Oscars. Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director in 2013 for Gravity and again in 2018 for Roma. Alejandro González Iñárritu won back-to-back Oscars in 2014 and 2015 for Birdman and The Revenant, respectively. And in 2017, Guillermo del Toro joined the Mexican party by winning Best Director for The Shape of Water. During the Golden Age of Mexican cinema from 1936 to 1956, Mexico dominated the Latin American film industry. In 2025 we will programme a selection of classic Mexican films and the best of contemporary films from Mexico as part of our Country Focus.
