The discovery of a lost masterpiece stolen by the Nazi’s causes excitement in the art world, but who does it really belong to?
Playfully satirising the conniving, deceitful machinations of the high-end art world, this wittily scripted drama begins with arrogant fine art auctioneer André Masson hearing of the discovery of a painting by Egon Schiele hanging on the wall of a factory worker’s home. Suspecting it to be a forgery, he is initially sceptical but is astonished when the painting is authenticated as a lost masterpiece that was stolen by the Nazis in 1939. With the help of his ex-wife and an eccentric intern, Masson sets out to close the deal of his career, but things become more complicated when relations of its original Jewish owners come forward.
Director Pascal Bonitze introduces us to an interesting and well played ensemble of characters and interlocking relationships, while probing moral and ethical dilemmas around ownership and questioning the true value of art.
“HIS ELEGANT STORY CAPIVATES AND AMUSES AT THE SAME TIME DESPITE ITS DETOURS, BRILLIANT IN ITS WRITING, BOTH IN THE CHISELED DIALOGUES AND IN THE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE CHARACTERS PLAYED BY AMAZING ACTORS”
