French Courtesan Lili d’Alengy travels to Rome to bring her learning-disabled daughter to an institute for special needs children, run by the titular Maria and Giuseppe. Maria is a woman taking the role of a man, and as such is not paid for her inspirational work, yet she is no less committed to helping ‘idiot’ children who would otherwise be cast out of society. Seeing past their exteriors, she treats them like any other class, with results that far exceed any expectations of the fiercely misogynistic society of the turn of the 20th century.
This inspiring story of two head strong women on parallel journeys of motherhood and emancipation is brought to the screen with sumptuous photography, lavish production design and a pair of winning performances.
