Saoirse Ronan turns in yet another phenomenal award baiting performance in Nora Fingscheidt’s immersive adaptation of Amy Liptrops best-selling memoir
30-year-old Ronna leaves rehab and a turbulent life in London and returns to the remote Orkney islands, hoping for a fresh start among the wild beauty of her childhood home. But it’s not easy to outrun the past, and memories of her drink and drug fuelled London life and troubled family history still haunt her.
Director Nora Fingscheidt (System Crasher, CIFF 2020), brings Lipmos’s candid prose vibrantly to life, with the harsh but beautiful environs of the windswept islands providing the perfect mirror to Rona’s tortured psyche. As she relives childhood traumas and more recent challenges and against this tempestuous backdrop, it’s ultimately the transcendent power of nature that will set her on the path to recovery.
SPECIAL GUESTS: German director/ screenwriter, Nora Fingscheid gained critical acclaim for her film System Crasher which screened at Cheltenham International Film Festival in 2020. She moved on to direct Sandra Bullock in The Unforgivable and comes to the film festival this year with her latest feature, The Outrun starring Saiorse Ronen. She is joined by co-writer Amy Liptrot on whose book the film is based.
