The Monk And The Gun

Pawo Choyning Dorji follows his Oscar nominated film Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom with another charming story set against the stunning backdrop of rural Bhutan

In 2006, as the tiny Himalayan Kingdom becomes the last country to connect to the internet and television, Bhutan is about to hold its first election. To the bemusement of the peaceful Buddhist population, the authorities organise a mock election with fictional parties as a way of introducing the somewhat alien concept of democracy. Fearing upheavals, an ageing llama sends a young monk on an eventful quest to acquire a pair of guns.

Packed with intriguing surprises and a cavalcade of colourful characters, this delightfully warm, perceptive and slyly satirical window into the world’s happiest nation builds towards a finale that will leave a big smile on your face.

“THE STORYTELLING IS LIVELY AND PIQUANT, DEMONSTRATING THE DIRECTOR’S SENSE OF HUMOUR AND SHARP OBSERVATIONAL SKILLS”
